Bigger, Faster, Better

I’ve had a few sewing machines in my life. First was my mothers’ machine. An old beast that I only remember as being slightly yellowed and likely to take off my finger at any moment. It served a purpose in my house for my mom: to make me clothes. For me, it encouraged me to learn hand sewing. I hated that machine, and for the life of me I cannot explain why.  I hand sewed everything I could-quilts, doll clothes, odd-looking stuffed animals. I couldn’t get enough. Of course, once I figured out boys were way more fascinating, sewing took a back seat.

My next machine was an old 80’s beast that was secured nicely into a desk. It was a salvaged item from my then father in law’s garage sale. He had no interest in it, but I did.  I remember having my ex put it in the van to drag it into our tiny little apartment, where it sat. It hadn’t been serviced in over a decade, and wouldn’t even thread. Defeated, it went into the storage area below our building. When I eventually moved to Seattle, it stayed with the ex after having moved with us 3 times.  I stuck to hand sewing then too.

A few years later I spied a cheap machine at a Target post-turkey day sale. It was less than $100 and I had to go to 3 Target stores to get it. I toted it home and peeked in at the box. I quickly forgot about it after I got my new Subaru. I later opened it up to do a little sewing and crafting. Either something needed mending, or I wanted to make sure it worked. My love of sewing was renewed!

In the past year or two, i have been making blankets, and quilts and have ventured into sewing bags and pants. Its been nice to be a little more self-sufficient, and to have something that is all mine.

Recently my cheap little Singer was starting to annoy me, it wouldn’t stay threaded, and it was just a pain to sew through fabrics. I vowed when I could afford it I would buy a new machine. That happened a few weeks ago, after I finished the new fabric cabinet. I bought a Brother machine, with 100 something stitches and 6 types of button holes. It has quilt and embroidery stitches and when programmed can spell my name. Its crazy, and I love it.

I’ll be doing more with it, making pot holders and aprons from designs I have sketched, and I’ll be bartering with an amazing local seamstress to learn more tricks.  I’m excited, it’s a nice contrast to an otherwise busy life.

As I complete projects, I’ll post em and show folks what I am up to, I’ll also post some of the garden barter pics too, stay tuned.

Yours in craftiness and playing with bigger, faster and better toys!

Updates!

Man! It has been a while since I posted.  I’d like to say I have been wonderfully busy-out doing amazing things, saving people from fires, or learning welding-you know, the exciting stuff…but I haven’t. I’ve been remodeling the house slowly and hitting the road (albeit less than I would like). Yes, my house is eating my social life!

I have been working on a wall of cupboards in the kitchen, and working with my friend Nate who has been remodeling my bathroom to give it that spa like feel I had always wanted for my home. So day by day, hour by hour, home depot trip by home depot trip my house is becoming more functional, better looking and just overall cooler.

I’ve also been crafting up a storm, buying and fixing up a new antique cupboard to hold my fabrics and have been busy sketching out designs for fun baby blankets. This of course has meant numerous trips to the fabric store.

hmmm…What else has been going on…

I had a wonderful trip through Oregon and California at the start of May-pics to come. We spent 10 days hiking, caving and rock climbing-I even squeezed in time to hit an awesome craft store-Taterpatch quilts in Merrill Oregon.

People keep asking what the wedding/baby/new house updates are.  I always laugh when I hear this. We’re still working out the dates, but keep getting side tracked by everything else life brings our way. I’ll keep you all updated as we figure that out. After 14  years, we’re in no rush. 🙂

Show-wise, I am taking a small break from showing my work after hanging in Big Al’s for 2 months-I did sell a huge print of an old series but am enjoying the spare time I have lately. On a happy note, I am doing bartering these days. An amazing gardener needs photography done for her website, and I have no idea how to garden-other than the stick in the ground and hope it survives. While it’s OK looking out there, I know it could be amazing, so Allyson will be teaching me the ropes on how to sustain my own garden. I’ll have to add pics from that to the blog too.

For tonight, I think that is about all the updates I have. Its back to the back room for more sketching and some tea before bed.

Cheers, Raina

Its been a while!

I realized its been so darn long since I have logged in and posted anything! I can’t even remember the last time I had blogged. From the looks of it, it was around May!

Since then a lot has been going on-quite a few road trips, a break from photography as a job and a lot of time at work.  We’ve managed to go to the Redwoods, a few events and Glacier National Park. I squeezed in a festival, Crank It Up, and an engagement in there too. Its been a good few months!  Here’s a few shots:

Lately, we’ve been prepping the house for sale-a long process since there is always SOMETHING that this house needs. We’re happy with the way the house is coming along and confident we should be able to sell in the Spring.

The coming weeks should bring a photography event for a friend, editing of CIU, and at least one or two more road trips. I’ll be posting work as I can and keeping you all updated of where I will be!

Until next time,
Raina

Early Summer Updates

It’s odd.

I sit in front of a computer every day, all day long. I manage to check my email and my facebook  an amount of times that I am sure isn’t healthy, but I keep forgetting to post here! So here it goes, a early summer update!

Things in May were busy and good-had two shows, work was busy, even managed to squeeze in a trip to the redwoods and do a quick cemetery shoot. I even ventured out to look  at buying a new house.

After all the action of May, I’m taking the next month or two off to relax and regroup. Work is picking up again after a slight lull, and I need to be on top of that.  So here it is mid June, and I have nothing on tap. It’s pretty nice-no shows,

Crazy making

Its been a busy few weeks, with a lot of crazy making. I have been trying to get things done around the house, but I am finding it increasingly hard to stay in when it is SO beautiful outside. This has yielded two great things: The gardens are almost all done (and early too!), and I have 230 new shots from one weekend. Insert happy sigh here!  Its nice when you can turn a drive home from a birthday party into a series of photos.

If you haven’t been, Port Gamble and Port Townsend are amazing this time of year. It was in the high 50’s, low 60’s and sunny. The Sunday market was in full swing, and Conor, Mia and I had the windows down and the radio up.  What more could a girl want? 🙂

Stay tuned for some pictures, and an updated calendar. It’s looking like this summer is going to be filled with some great shows.  I’ll also be posting some great events from other artists and South Park-just to round out the fun.

I hope everyone has been having a fabulous spring, I know I have!

Cheers,

Raina

Come on down!

Hello world!

Well, Hello world. You’re looking very shiny and nice today.  🙂   Welcome to my page. It’s an attempt to get my work and in turn, myself out and about.

You always get to these pages, where you think: “Hmm…my first blog/page/thing/whatever…It should be GOOD and BIG! And…”

But then you just sit and can’t really find the words you want to immortalize who you are (or at least pass the time).

I could start here and tell you about myself, but there’s a page for that. I could write out my calendar for the week, but I am pretty sure there’s an app for that.

*According to Apple and most sites, there’s an app for everything.*

So the best I can offer for this first blog is this:

Hi. My name is Raina. I live in Seattle. I’m an artist, a feminist, a nerd, a cook, a social worker, a girlfriend, and a person that changes depending on what hat I have on. Have a seat, grab a drink, and have a look around my page. You’ll find food, adventure, critters, and crafts. I don’t sit still and I can’t wait to share all of that with you!

Cheers to you in new adventures!
